POULSBO — The last home meet of the track and field season is always a fun-filled affair, providing the final opportunity for senior athletes to perform in front of the hometown crowds.

They went out with a bang.

When the team scores were tallied up at the end of the meet, the Vikings girls and boys track teams edged past Central Kitsap by respective scores of 73-72 and 76-73 Friday afternoon at North Kitsap Stadium.

“It’s been cold out here all year, and it hasn’t warmed up yet,” Vikings coach Dave Snyder said of the chilly meet.

Snyder’s smile was filled with warmth, though, as he watched the senior athletes give it their all.

“The last home meet of the year always is enjoyable,” he said. “It gives athletes one more chance to compete in front of their family members and friends before they participate in postseason meets.”

In boys action, senior Zac Simmons was a major reason why the Vikings finished with a better point total than the Cougars. Simmons took home three first place titles (200M, 400M, 1600M relay) for North.

“It was a good way to close out my high school career,” Simmons said. “I am getting ready (in postseason meets) for the 200 and 400.”

Spenser Haley earned two first place finishes (shotput, discus) cementing his position as one of the most prolific throwers in not only the Narrows League, but the entire state.

Other boys athletes nabbing first place included Aaron Bilbao (pole vault) and Michael Gottschalk (javelin), Brian Cleaver (triple jump) and Cody Bradwell (800M).

The 1600M relay team comprised of Simmons, Bradwell, Nick Cameron and Levi Pixton took first place as well.

In girls action, hurdler Christine Parker had the kind of day she will never forget. Parker captured two first place spots (100M hurdles, 300M hurdles) for North. Parker was ecstatic after finding out she clocked a 17.34 in the 100M hurdles. Previously, her fastest time of the season was 17.94.

“It’s amazing. I have been trying to get my time down for a long time and it’s finally dropping,” Parker said. “It’s really coming all together for me.”

It’s definitely coming all together at the right time for senior pole vaulter Nadia Ifland. Ifland broke her own school record — 9 feet, 6 inches she set on April 25 – with a vault of 10 feet.

“Nadia set the school record again. This time she did it by another six inches,” assistant coach Bruce Swanson said. “She set the record on a borrowed pole, too.”

Swanson said Ifland’s faster runway speed was the key in the effort.

“She didn’t slow down at all,” he said. “She ran really fast and it made a difference. Especially when it came down to her last three strides.”

Chloe Stamper came from behind, capturing first place (3200M) in her favorite event with a time of 13 minutes, 59 seconds. Stamper trailed by three meters for the first five laps. With two laps remaining in the race, Stamper turned on the jets passing Chelsea Raulsome with ease. When Stamper crossed the finish line, she was ahead of Raulsome by a staggering 70 meters.

Other athletes nabbing first place in the last meet of the regular season included Jodee Mitchell (100M), Jade Niemeyer (shotput), Michelle Lloyd (javelin) and KC Fossum (high jump).

The boys and girls track squads travel to South Kitsap today for the Narrows League meet in Port Orchard.
