Sumner Schoenike, Gig Harbor (Prefers Democratic Party)

Q: What background and experience do you bring to this office?

A: I hold a Bachelor of Science, University of Texas, Medical Doctor, Baylor College of Medicine, Master of Public Health, University of Texas School of Public Health.

Sumner, wife Jan and daughter Celi are proud citizens of the 26th Legislative District since 1987.

As a pediatrician for over 30 years, I taught pediatrics at Oregon Health & Sciences University, was a three-time recipient of the Nesbitt Most Outstanding Teacher award, practiced Emergency Medicine at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, pediatrics for military families, co-owned a thriving small business pediatric practice in Pierce County.

Proven, effective leadership: Pierce County Medical Society (Community Service Award) and president 2007, Washington State Medical Association, Community Health Care System, Franciscan Health System, Communities in Schools Peninsula, Pierce County Project Access, healthcare for low-income uninsured.

Q: If elected, what will be your top three priorities, and how will you accomplish them?

A: As a physician I will make Washington State the model for health care in our nation by applying informed physician leadership in implementing health care law.

As a father I will reduce our high school dropout rate by developing policy for career paths for nonacademic students, so they have the opportunity to graduate from high school on track to professional success.

As a small business owner I will grow our economy and jobs by holding the line on taxes

and getting rid of governmental red tape.
