NK gymnasts win first meet

PORT ANGELES — Missing one of their top senior gymnasts at their first meet of the season, the North Kitsap Vikings proved ability in their depth with a first place finish out of four teams at the Port Angeles Invite Saturday.

North squeaked by Shorewood for the title as the final team tallies read: North Kitsap, 143.90; Shorewood, 142.15; Port Angeles, 128.95; Shorecrest, 122.75.

“Individually, the girls all did fine, getting the first meet jitters out of the way and really showing us what we need to start focusing on,” said head coach Kris Goodfellow. “Of course, we are still missing Kai Morrow and most likely will be for at least another two weeks.”

The senior has returned to a limited practice regimen after injuring her knee in the preseason.

Meanwhile, freshman Melissa Kunold has taken to the Vikings’ “stand out” spot for now, Goodfellow said, as she entered an all-around performance that tied for first place in her first high school meet Jan. 6.

Led by first place finishes on the vault (8.5) and floor (8.8), Kunold racked up 32.45 all-around points. Senior Alice Pittack finished fourth-place all around with 30.5 points — second place on vault (8.3), fifth on bars (7.15), fourth on floor (8.25).

Next up, the Vikings will travel to Shorewood for a dual Jan. 13. The following week, the Vikings will hit the road to face Port Angeles and Capital in a tri-meet Jan. 19.
