Despite snowfall the previous day, EcoFest and opening day of the Kingston Farmers’ Market took place April 19. About 325 attended EcoFest at Stillwaters Environmental Education Center and all the exhibitors showed up despite the cold, which didn’t keep the green and festive atmosphere from permeating the event. Kids loved playing forest bingo on the trails, hugging trees, examining pond water, painting and getting a little muddy. Stillwaters gave out special community awards including: Margaret Mead Citizen of the Year Award to Nancy & Dan Martin; Sustainable Business of the Year Award to Lucky Star Clothing & Pine Cone Gifts; Volunteer of the Year Award to Don Davidson; and Youth Volunteers of the Year to Jenneke Oostman (Girl Scout who created a new pond trail at Stillwaters) and Hank Veenstra (musician who also performed at EcoFest).
The farmers’ market also enjoyed opening day and many brave vendors brought down plants and produce, handcrafted wood furniture, homemade dog cookies, hot coffee and excitement for the season ahead. Cesar Medel heated up the atmosphere with his classical guitar.
