POULSBO — Joyce Smith said her husband loved his family, enjoying life and most of all — his country.

Which is why raising the stars and stripes on a new flagpole in his honor Monday will be one of her greatest joys.

The John C. “J.C.” Smith memorial flagpole will be dedicated by the North Kitsap Republican Women organization during its Flag Day celebration 11 a.m. June 14 at Nelson Park. The addition to the newly-developed park is something the Smith family and club have been working on for nearly one year.

“He just loved his country very, very much,” Smith said. “The kids and I just thought this was a great way to let Dad know we still adore him.”

J.C. Smith died May 24, 2002 at the age of 73. Born in New York, Smith moved to the Northwest in 1962 to work for McDonnell Douglas, where he was employed until 1997. He was intimately involved with the U.S. Space Program from its inception, including the landing on the moon.

But the man affectionately known as J.C. was also well known in Poulsbo for his community participation. He was active in the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club and the North Kitsap Success mentoring program. The Lions club even has a memorial scholarship in his name.

“He was well-liked,” Smith said. “He was just sort of a unique person who would grow on you.”

The June 14 dedication will include a blessing from Father David Mayovsky of Smith’s home parish of St. Olaf’s Catholic Church and a short presentation from North Kitsap Republican Women President Fay Hendon.

Poulsbo Council members Connie Lord and Mike Regis, Poulsbo Parks and Recreation Director Mary McCluskey and area Republicans will be among the dignitaries attending. Joyce Smith will be on hand with her daughter and grandson and said she hopes the event will have a good turn out from the community.

“I know he’ll be there with us, smiling down one of those grins and happy to see so many people loved him,” she said.

The dedication will be followed by a picnic lunch at the park.
