How do they do that?!

“The audience laughs, cries, feels the suspense and, eventually, falls in love with this magical duet.” Wow. That’s quite a magic act, judging from the gushing review from the business manager of a theater in Florida.

“The audience laughs, cries, feels the suspense and, eventually, falls in love with this magical duet.”

Wow. That’s quite a magic act, judging from the gushing review from the business manager of a theater in Florida.

You can judge the magical powers of Kevin and Cindy Spencer for yourself, as the magicians appear April 28 at the Admiral Theatre in Bremerton as The Spencer’s Magic and Illusion Show.

Their show is more than just pulling a rabbit out of a hat or sawing a woman in half. It promises to be a glitzy affair with high-tech special effects, drama, comedy, romance and suspense:

“See a woman folded into a 12-inch box! Have your mind read! Experience the ‘Spikes of Doom’!”

The husband and wife duo have been performing their magic show for two decades, but it goes back further than that for Kevin.

He received his first magic kit for Christmas when he was 8, did magic through grade school and high school, and worked his way through college by performing magic.

“It has always been my dream to perform magic,” he said. “I am now living that dream.”

For Cindy, “I became involved in magic because I married a magician!” she said.

Kevin was influenced by magicians such as Harry Blackstone, Jr. and Doug Henning, and said one of the highlights of his life was getting the opportunity to talk personally with Henning after a show.

When the couple began touring and performing together the act was called “The Magic of Kevin Spencer.” Cindy was the obligatory beautiful assistant.

That changed when Kevin was severely injured in an auto accident in 1988, and Cindy had to take on a larger role.

“Forged into a team, we worked on routines that balanced us easily . . . illusions that showcased us both,’” Cindy said.

While other magicians of their caliber are happy to settle into a regular show at a set location, say Las Vegas, the Spencers make their living with a touring show. That is an act in itself, with 12 tons of state-of-the-art illusions and special effects gear to set up, tear down and haul to the next city.

They are on the road an average of 40 weeks out of the year, but they still love it.

“Even after having been on the road so long, each town or city is a new adventure,” Kevin said. “It’s never boring because there’s always an air of excitement in each new place we play.”

The Spencer’s Magic and Illusion Show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 28 at The Admiral Theatre, 515 Pacific Ave., Bremerton.

Tickets are $20 main floor and loge, $14 balcony. Main floor dinner show tickets are $51, reservations required. Tickets are available at the box office 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or by phone at (360) 373-6743.
