Burkas are out, bellies are in

OK, it’s not actually a “night” of belly dancing, since it’s being held at 3 p.m., but semantics aside, “Night of Belly Dance” promises to be an entertaining and exotic Sunday afternoon, April 30. And unlike traditional belly dancing, performed in dimly lit rooms for hooka-smoking men only, this performance is appropriate for all ages.

The event is hosted by Claudine McCormick, owner of The Dance Within studio in Poulsbo, and features dancers from all over Kitsap County, with ages ranging from preschool to octagenerian.

This is the fifth time McCormick has put on this event, and the first in this venue, the North Kitsap Auditorium.

“The audience reaction (to past shows) has been incredible,” McCormick said. “This is our hugest venue yet.”

It will also be the biggest show, with six performing troupes from McCormick’s studio, as well as a group from Port Orchard, Sharani’s Mandali, and three professional belly dancers and McCormick in solo exhibitions.

They will perform traditional belly dances, fusion and Arabic pop numbers, with professional staging, lighting and music. McCormick has choreographed a special “Bollywood”-style number for the finale.

She also said the lobby will be transformed into an Arabian tent, setting the mood for what’s ahead.

The event begins with a PowerPoint presentation of the history of belly dance and a short fashion show featuring various styles of belly dance attire.

Troupes from McCormick’s studio are Little Genies, ages 3-6; Arabian Princesses, ages 7-10; Jewels of the Nile, ages 14-18; Isis, intermediate level adults; Habibi Dancers, beginning intermediate level teens and adults; and Oasis Dancers, beginning level, ages teen to 80-plus.

McCormick will perform a fusion-style dance which she promises is “something you would never really think about belly dancing.”

Night of Belly Dance takes place at 3 p.m., April 30 at the North Kitsap Auditorium, 1881 Hostmark St., Poulsbo.

Tickets are $12 advance, $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Winslow Drugs on Bainbridge Island, Heavenly Choices in Poulsbo, Sacks Feed and Garden in Kingston, the Kitsap Mall in Silverdale and Shear Attractions in Port Orchard.
