SEQUIM — Ruby Roberts continues to mow down the competition she goes up against every single race.
Roberts took first place overall at the Olympic League Cross Country Championships Thursday afternoon at the 5K Sequim Cedars Dungeness course, finishing with a time of 18:07. The Kingston High School sophomore led the pack the entire way as second place finisher Allison Cutting of Sequim High School crossed the finish line 52 seconds later.
“Ruby has pretty much beat everyone she’s raced against this year,” said Buccaneers cross country coach Roger Coffman. “The only time I think she didn’t get first was at the Salt Creek Invitational where she took third.”
Coffman said Roberts is a runner with heart.
“She was ahead the whole time and did a fantastic job like she always does,” he said. “It was fun to watch. She’s an all-around natural runner.”
KHS freshman Rose Bishop finished in ninth place overall clocking a time of 20:49.
“She’s vastly improved since the beginning of the season,” Coffman said. “She’s a talented freshman.”
Chloe Stamper finished in 37th place with a time of 23:28, Rachel Burk earned 44th place turning in a time of 24:24, Erika Rabura came in 46th place nabbing a time of 24:27 and Alexandra Dammarall finished in 67th place with a time of 29:35.
The Buccaneers girls harriers finished in fifth place overall as a team.
In boys action, the Buccaneers runners finished in sixth place overall.
Justin Doud was the fastest Buc, nabbing 14th place with a mark of 17:07. Paul Pingree wasn’t far behind taking 16th place clocking a 17:13.
Other Kingston runners competing in the Olympic League Championships included Ben Stamper (26th place), Nick Schippers (45th place), Austin Cherry (55th place) and Andrew Michak (62nd place).
Coffman said every individual from the boys and girls teams have advanced to the Class 2A West Central District meet at American Lake Golf Course in Spanaway this Saturday.
The first-year head coach is looking forward to the most important week of practice of the season before the biggest meet of the year. Those finishing with excellent times at districts will advance to the state meet Nov. 3 in Pasco.
“We’re going to have a good week of practice,” he said. “We’ll just keep gelling together as individuals and as a team. I want everyone on our team to continue to run faster.”
