BREMERTON — The good news — the North Kitsap Vikings No. 1 doubles team Kevin Joines and Evan Faulk finished out a strong regular season with a 14-5 record.

The not-so-good news — the pair’s post-season hopes ended Monday at the Narrows’ district preliminary tournament, suffering a defeat against the No. 1 team from Port Angeles, Ryan Grey and Adam Williams by a 6-3, 6-1 score.

“It’s been a pretty good season,” Faulk said following Monday’s match. “I just wish we’d played more aggressive, played harder today.”

Both players admitted that against their tougher opponents during the season, they could bring their game to a higher level. But against a team like the one they faced Monday — which they had beaten previously in the season — they were not able to play their best.

“We played well against people who were good (tennis players),” Joines said. “But against the people who weren’t as good, we couldn’t play as well with.”

Joines, a soccer player in the spring, and Faulk, who plays golf in the spring as well, said they’ll work hard during their off-season, also stating they had just joined Bainbridge Island Racquet Club so they can continue to develop their skills. Faulk is a junior and Joines is a sophomore, so there is still much time left for the pair to grow as a team. The team’s coach Jay DeVries said he looks forward to what they’ll again bring to the court next year.

“They’re both intelligent kids and a good doubles team,” he said. “They have good footwork and work off each other’s strengths. They’re both great kids.”

The only player left for the Vikings is junior Jordan Prince, who is into the Narrows League tournament at the University of Puget Sound and will play this Thursday. The draws for the event have yet to be determined.
