Poulsbo Farmers Market ready for 2007

POULSBO — Following a successful 2006 season, the Poulsbo Farmers Market is set to make its 2007 debut Saturday morning in the Poulsbo Village Medical Center parking lot. “I can’t wait for it to open,” said Mayor Kathryn Quade, who is the featured artist of the PFM’s 2007 poster. “It’s the opening of spring for me.”

Saturday’s kickoff will mark the beginning of a new era for the market, which has seen its corporate sponsorships double in the past year, PFM board member Annie Eissler said. The market will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 13.

“We have a full lineup of local musicians and bands every Saturday,” Eissler said. “We also have chef’s demos planned for every month of the season.”

The cooking demonstrations will show consumers how to use their market produce and turn it into great meals, she said.

“In addition to John Nesby from Mor Mor Bistro, we’re going to have Jeff Cox from Central Market’s Cook’s Express and an instructor from Olympic College’s culinary arts program, Chris Plemmons,” Eissler said.

Another change for the market is the number of events planned throughout the season to attract more shoppers, she said.

“It’s not just a little jump. It’s really an exponential jump in the number of activities and programs planned,” Eissler said. “It’s pretty significant.”

One of the market’s more popular events, the Tomato Taste Off, which isn’t scheduled until Sept. 8, will get an early push during Saturday’s opening, she said.

“We are going to be providing stakes for tomato starters to encourage people to grow them,” she said.

Even though the tomatoes won’t be ready to eat until later in the year, customers in search of fresh produce grown without the use of chemicals will be pleased to find a wider array of organics at the market, Eissler said.

“We have a large number of organic producers who will be at this year’s market,” she said.

Another factor that could bring this year’s market season even more success is it will remain in the same location for the second consecutive year.

“The people who own the Poulsbo Village Dental Clinic have been great,” Eissler said. “We have just had great support from the entire community.”

Other events planned for the 2007 market are Children’s Day on July 28, Touch A Tractor on Aug. 18 and a Pumpkin Party on Oct. 13.
