“SUQUAMISH – The combination of two Northwest passions has collided on Suquamish Way next to the Texaco. This month artist Gillian Barber-Lowell and husband Tim opened The Garden Art Workshop, which features area artists who specialize in art for the garden. The display will be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. through Dec. 24. After that time people can make appointments to view the art. I like to create the unexpected in the garden, Barber-Lowell said of her work. The mirrors, garden plaques and sculptures are made from non-shrink grout. Mirrors add more dimension to the garden and reflect back the beauty of the garden, she said. Barber-Lowell, Bainbridge Island, has had her studio at the store site since June, but this month decided to sell her art there as well. Other artists’ works are on display such as Susan Sellen, Sue Beilka, Kelly Hume, and Brenda Beeley. Beeley, a Suquamish resident, has been creating planters and ceramic garden sculpture for about eight years. I love being outdoors, she said adding that garden art brings whimsey and color to the garden. An avid gardener as well as an artist, Beeley has had her work shown at Bainbridge Island’s Flora Galora, Poulsbo’s Checkers gallery and at Seattle’s Pratt Arts School. She combines both her passions – art and gardening. Before I make a piece, I go out and gather leaves from my garden, she said. She uses comfrey, grape leaves, Dusty Miller and gunnera geranium leaves to make impressions. Conversely Beeley will plant specific things in her garden depending on the art project she is working on.
