Eight contestants vie for Norwegian royal crown

POULSBO — Saturday evening will mark the end of one young lady’s journey and the beginning of another’s as a new Miss Viking Fest is chosen. Miss Viking Fest 2005 Kayla McAfee will pass her bunad to one of eight contestants vying for this year’s crown as the pageant will honor families that are or have been affected by cancer.

POULSBO — Saturday evening will mark the end of one young lady’s journey and the beginning of another’s as a new Miss Viking Fest is chosen.

Miss Viking Fest 2005 Kayla McAfee will pass her bunad to one of eight contestants vying for this year’s crown as the pageant will honor families that are or have been affected by cancer.

The 2006 Miss Viking Fest contestants are:

• Deziray Henderson is an 18-year-old senior at North Kitsap High School. Henderson is active in R.A.V.E, soccer and softball. She is sponsored by Bella Luna Pizzeria.

• Kelsey Fidler is a 16-year-old junior at North Kitsap High School. Fidler is involved in volleyball, extreme sports and Lifesavers. She is sponsored by JJ’s Fish House and Kitsap Farm and Garden Tractor.

• Emily Wildung is a 17-year-old senior at North Kitsap High School. Wildung is active in choir, her church youth group and volunteers at a nursing home.

• Whitney Glebe is a 16-year-old junior at North Kitsap High School. Glebe is active in swimming, gymnastics, lacrosse and L.I.N.K. She is sponsored by JB Concrete.

• Jessica Hanna is a 17-year-old senior at North Kitsap High School. Hanna is active in swimming and baseball and is a committee member for the Relay For Life. She is sponsored by Le Soleil Tanning & Spa and Jane and Sonny Woodward of John L. Scott.

• Katee Barker is a 16-year-old junior at North Kitsap High School. Barker is active in cheerleading and choir and earned an excellent rating award from the Olympic Music Electoral Association. She is sponsored by Tolman & Kirk law firm, Liberty Bay Auto, Dr. Trent Rencher and West Sound Bank.

• Jasmine Campbell is a 17-year-old senior at North Kitsap High School. Campbell is active in basketball and choir and enjoys dancing. She is sponsored by Bainbridge Disposal, Inc.

• Elizabeth Almond is a 17-year-old junior at Olympic College through the Running Start program. Almond is active in her church youth group, Norwegian Leikerringen dancing and choir. She is sponsored by Almond Properties.

Miss Viking Fest will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the two princesses will each receive a $500 scholarship.

The $1,000 Doug McKay scholarship will be awarded as well, to the contestant with the best platform.

The pageant will begin at 6 p.m. April 22 at Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger.
