POULSBO — Beginning Monday, parents of sixth through 12th grade students in the North Kitsap School District will no longer have to wonder whether their children are hitting the books.
They’ll be able to access pertinent information quickly and accurately with a click of a button.
Next week the NKSD will send parents in letters notifying them of the Skyward Family Access program. In it, parents of high school and middle school students will receive a login and password information, allowing them to review their student’s progress from their homes or offices.
Parents will have access to everything from attendance and quarter/semester grades to current daily grades and emergency contact information.
NKSD Director of Technology and Information Services Bill Every said parents who don’t have access to a computer can contact the school to receive information regarding their daughter or son’s academic progress reports. He said he is excited about creating the opportunity for parents.
“One of our main concerns over the last few years was, ‘How do parents know what their student is doing in school?’ With this program, they can check online to see what their child is doing constantly,” he said. “There’s a lot of information on the site. I think it’s an exciting opportunity for parents to be more involved with their children’s educational process. It’s an absolutely amazing tool for parents, students and staff members.”
Every said North Mason High School and Bainbridge Island High School already have the Skyward programs.
Originally, the district had planned on activating the Skyward Family Access system in January of 2007.
The decision to delay the program’s implementation was in response to the transitioning taking place across the NKSD, primarily due to the reconfiguration of grade levels and the opening of Kingston High School.
“After some fairly lengthy discussions, we as a district decided to postpone the family access program until October of 2007,” Every said. “We wanted to give teachers and students some time for adjustment into their surroundings before the program was implemented.”
Every said the majority of the faculty at the district are anxious to get the program started.
“At the North Kitsap High School open house (Sept. 20) I was asked when the Skyward Family Access program was going to be live,” he said. “When I said the beginning of October, there was a round of applause. Most of the teachers are pretty excited about it. In the last two or three weeks a lot of people have been asking when the program will be available.”
