POULSBO — Some of North Kitsap’s youngest football players will get a chance to play on one of the game’s biggest stages.
The North Kitsap Pee Wee B team, composed of 11- and 12-year-old players, will play at Seahawks Stadium in October.
The team’s game against Bainbridge Island will be held at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 12, just hours before one of the Seahawks’ most anticipated games, an ESPN-televised tussle with the San Francisco 49ers.
“It sounds like a lot of fun. People who get there earlier will get to watch, that’ll be cool,” said Nathan Johnson, who plays fullback and defensive end for the football team.
Johnson has seen one Seahawks game and one Cougars game at the stadium, and he’s excited to play there himself.
“I like the logo in the middle,” he said of the field.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for the kids, and that’s definitely the reason we did it,” said defensive coach Rob Johnson, who also serves as athletic director for the North Kitsap Pee Wees.
Johnson has seen youth teams play before Seahawks games, and started calling the team when he became AD for the Pee Wees.
“I made a pest of myself to the point where they’ve got us scheduled,” Johnson quipped.
The B team plays eight-minute quarters with a running clock toward the end. Players are allowed to weigh up to 140 pounds.
Those interested in watching the Pee Wees must buy a ticket to the game, but the Seahawks are offering a special group rate of $37 per ticket (normally $47). While ticket-holders will have assigned seats, they will be allowed to sit closer to the field to watch the Pee Wee game.
Most Pee Wee football teams begin play Sept. 13. The A (13- and 14-year-old players) and B teams are still looking for players.
