POULSBO — The North Kitsap School District has awarded the bid for its next major project to Cree Construction.
The Lynnwood firm will remodel the gymnasium and “H” building at North Kitsap High School starting next month. Construction is expected to begin May 19 and completion is projected for March of 2004.
Cree submitted the lowest bid of seven companies. Its base bid for the project was $4,997,000, and eight alternates were also approved, bringing the total cost of the project to $5,762,000.
“We were able to get all of our alternates, which is super,” said North Kitsap School Board Member Helen Hoover.
The alternates include a weight room near the gymnasium, a sports medicine facility, an additional auxiliary gym, an intercom system and sound system, a cooling system for the gym and a cover to protect the gym floor.
A physical education classroom will also be added.
Another alternate is reconfigured space for the “H” building to encourage small-group work among the students.
Hoover said the cover will be a nice addition to protect the new wood floor.
“It’s going to be a nice floor to begin with,” she said.
Cree Construction worked on Gordon and Suquamish renovation in 1993 and 1994.
It has completed more than 100 school construction projects in the Northwest.
Its work on the gym and “H” building has been funded by a $60-million-dollar bond passed by voters in 2001.
The bond also funded the renovation of the community pool and improvements to Pearson Elementary.
Other projects include the Poulsbo Junior High building three modernization, work on Poulsbo and Suquamish Elementaries and the construction of a new high school in Kingston.
Robin Shoemaker, the district’s director of capital projects, said the low bid let the district afford separate rooms for the PE classroom and the sports medicine classroom.
She said the intercom system will make the “H” building more compatible with future improvement of the intercom system in the school as a whole.
She was also impressed with the record of the contractor.
“Cree has been a solid contractor in K-12 construction. We hear good things about them,” she said.
