FEDERAL WAY — If only North was classified as a 3A school.

That’s what the North Kitsap gymnastics team was wishing this weekend at the West Central District meet at Federal Way High School, head coach Kris Goodfellow said.

This year, after a shake-up in the way the 3A and 4A state meets are scheduled, there were considerably less qualifying spots available — almost half.

In 2006, three teams, the four top all-around finishers and 13 individuals moved on to the 4A state meet. This year those numbers were reserved for 3A, and out of the 4A’s 16 teams and 155 competitors, only two teams, the two top all-around finishers and seven other individuals gained admittance into the state tournament.

Among those were North’s senior Kai Morrow and freshman Melissa Kunold.

Kunold qualified with a score of 8.575 on the vault, while Morrow earned a 7.575 qualifying mark on the bars, Goodfellow said.

Those two Vikings finished 12th (Morrow) and 16th (Kunold) all-around with 33.625 and 32.55 points respectively.

“If the new high school had opened this year like originally planned, NK would have competed in that (3A) meet, and Alice Pittack and Whitney Glebe would have also made it to state in at least one event,” Goodfellow said.

Glebe, who finished 35th all-around, scored 8.25 on the vault for 24th place in the event. Pittack came in 37th all-around, turning in her best event on the floor with a score of 8.525 for 32nd place.

“Overall, I am very pleased,” Goodfellow said. “They started off very strong on floor and continued to hold their own throughout the meet.”
