Numbers declined from last year for motorist stopped and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Kitsap County during the recent “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign conducted from Nov. 27 to Jan. 1.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission reported Jan. 9 that 91 motorists were stopped and arrested in Kitsap County. In 2012, during the same time period, county law enforcement officers arrested 148 people for driving under the influence (DUI).

Statewide, there were more than 2,720 people arrested during the campaign during the holiday season.

Port Orchard police and Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies joined officers from Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Naval Base Kitsap, Poulsbo and Suquamish police departments, and the Washington State Patrol participated in the extra DUI patrols, with the support of the Kitsap County Traffic Safety Task Force.

The extra patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
