Stennis sailor dies in Eglon car crash

EGLON — A one car accident near Eglon Saturday morning left a 20-year-old man dead and injured the 19-year-old driver.

Both were on active duty aboard the U.S.S. John C. Stennis in Bremerton, which returned to port Aug. 31 after a deployment to Iraq for nearly nine months.

According to deputies from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the crash, which was called in shortly before 2 a.m., took place southbound on Eglon Road when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp left turn. The car, a 1993 Acura Integra hatchback, left the roadway and struck a utility pole, which it sheared at the base. It then collided with two large maple trees, which stopped its progress,

KCSO deputies and crews from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded. The passenger was declared dead at the scene, and the driver was transported by NKF&R to an athletic field at Wolfle Elementary in Kingston, where he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His injuries were not deemed life threatening.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts. KCSO traffic investigators believe excessive speed coupled with alcohol consumption were the primary causes of the accident.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who witnessed the accident or may have additional information, is asked to contact Deputy Mike Shannon at (360) 337-4634.
