POULSBO — With the first closure of State Route 305 nothing more than a memory, less than two weeks remain before a much longer shutdown of the highway hits North End motorists.
This past weekend’s closure went about as well as could be expected and the Poulsbo Police Department didn’t receive any complaints, said Poulsbo Police Sgt. Bill Playter.
“It went as smoothly as it possibly could, and we’re taking a wait-and-see approach on the next one,†Playter said, adding that no traffic citations were given along the detour during the project.
City Councilman Ed Stern said he made it a point to travel SR 305 through the detour route Sunday evening.
“I tried it myself between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., and it was slick getting around,†Stern said. “I’m feeling very positive and upbeat about it.â€
Beginning Sept. 11, crews from Stan Palmer Construction of Port Orchard will close Iverson Road between 8th Avenue and State Route 305 for five weeks.
However, crews will first close the northbound left turn lane on SR 305 beginning Sept. 7 so they can drive the pilings required to support a retaining wall for culvert installation at the site, said City Engineer Andrzej Kasiniak. The lane won’t reopen until Oct. 19.
North- and southbound traffic on the highway will be unaffected, but motorists will not be allowed onto that section of Iverson Street, Kasiniak said.
“This will be the last major impact of this year, and next year they’ll be working on Bond Road,†Kasiniak said.
The closure between 8th Avenue and SR 305 will end Sept. 29. The culvert installation on the east side of the highway will be the next cause of closure, he said. That work is set to begin Oct. 10 and should be completed by Oct. 19.
Unlike the closure between 8th Avenue and the highway, motorists will be able to travel down Lincoln Road to the highway, Kasiniak said. However, they will only be able to turn right at SR 305.
“The left turn lane will be closed, and it will be right in and right out,†he said.
Poulsbo police officers are expected to be stationed at the Lincoln Road/Caldart Avenue and Hostmark Street/Caldart Avenue intersections in the mornings and afternoons when school begins and lets out, he said.
“We’re concerned about the traffic on Hostmark, but Liberty Road will be affected as well,†Kasiniak said.
