Just a few of the colorful characters folks might get a chance to meet this weekend at Valley Nursery.
But they’re not whos, they’re whats — the names of just some of the thousands of fuchsia varieties available. The pink and purple phenomenon will be the focus as the Peninsula Fuchsia Society hosts its annual show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 21 and 22 at the nursery off Bond Road.
Valley has been hosting the society and its rare blossoms for more than eight years. The annual event used to be a judged competition but over the years has changed into an event meant to educate the public about all things fuchsia and help gardeners pick the right plants for their needs.
The two-day event will feature fuchsia plants hand-grown by society members and demonstrations both days on various fuchsia-related topics. Some plants will be on display and others will be offered for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the non-profit society.
Attendees will also be able to vote for the display fuchsia plant they feel is the “best of show” for the event.
“This year, I think they had a really good year so they should have a lot to show off,” Valley Nursery spokesperson Paula Anderson said.
Information on the Peninsula Fuchsia Society and its members, as well as reference books to browse will also be offered.
“We’ve actually gotten some new society members from this event,” Peninsula Fuchsia Society President Jean Conyers said.
But perhaps one of the most stunning exhibits at the annual show is the blossom table, a comprehensive exhibit of the many different fuchsia plants available.
“And if people see one that they like, it will either be for sale there, or we can order it for them,” Conyers explained.
