POULSBO — Perfection. Rarely in the sport of tennis do all five varsity slots on a team come out of each of their matches victorious on the same day. The Vikings boys varsity tennis squad broke out its broomsticks, crushing Mount Tahoma 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in a clean sweep at North Kitsap High School. The Vikings won every match in straight sets.

“It’s better to start the season with a ‘W’ than it is with an ‘L,’” said Vikings tennis coach Jay Devries. “I’m proud of the way the boys represent NK High School. We’re a very professional team who plays hard and is polite to our opponents. These kids know what to do and execute it.”

Vikings No. 1 singles player Andrew Kilpatrick and No. 2 singles player Rex Olson played in very different scenarios as they upended their foes from MT.

Kilpatrick won a hotly contested 2-0 (6-3, 6-3) match against Mount Tahoma No. 1 singles player Joon Park.

“Andrew improved his game dramatically in the offseason,” Devries said. “Andrew had a tough opponent today and this year he has the ability to close out a match. He’s mentally tougher.”

Kilpatrick was ecstatic following his opening day victory.

“He was a tough opponent. To come out the victor against a tough opponent in the first one of the year feels good. The first match of the year is always nerve racking,” Kilpatrick said. “I struggled a bit in the second set but I made it through to the end.”

Olson captured a 2-0 (6-0, 6-3) win in the first varsity match of his high school career. He attributed his improvement between the lines due to playing three days a week over the summer at Bremerton Tennis & Athletic Club.

“I’ve became a lot more consistent. My serve is better than it was last year,” he said. “That’s pretty cool that I won today. It’s a good accomplishment.”

The Vikings No. 1 doubles team of Joe McBurnie and Conner Gallagher made short work of their opponents, outscoring its foes 2-0 (6-0, 6-2) in two sets of play.

The Vikings No. 3 doubles squad of Andrew Friesen and Thomas Essenpreis shutout its MT counterparts, and didn’t allow a single point 2-0 (6-0, 6-0) in a straight sets victory.

“We came up to the net and played up there the whole game,” Essenpreis said. “That was the key to winning it.”

The seniors of No. 2 doubles duo of TJ French and Tyler Seth dominated, outscoring MT’s No. 2 doubles team 2-0 (6-1, 6-1) in two sets.

“This a good way to start up a season. It’s a good warmup match for the entire team,” French said. “Hopefully, this will get us all set up for the rest of the year.”

The Vikings host Central Kitsap at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Kitsap High School tennis courts.
