POULSBO — Summer’s finally arrived. To celebrate the end of an arduous school year and the beginning of summer, the North Kitsap Pool unveiled a school’s out diving meet invitational Sunday afternoon. Students from Bainbridge Island and Anacortes joined North Kitsap School District students in the water for a friendly competition amongst athletes.

“It was a really low-key event. It was non-sanctioned event,” said NK Pool aquatics manager Greg Schmidt. “It just was fun to get athletes diving out there. The majority of the divers competing were novice divers.”

Even though there were five judges in attendance, the meet definitely wasn’t a pressure-cooker situation.

“Yesterday was all about fun,” Schmidt said Monday. “We just wanted divers to have a good time out there.”

Of the 11 divers enrolled in the competition, three were from North Kitsap.

The trio consisting of Nikki Sherman (GU-12), Andrea Coyle (GU-16) and Jacob Strader (BU-18) took first place in their respective divisions during the diving meet.

“The kids from North Kitsap did great,” Schmidt said. “They all had the highest scores in their age group category. I expected them to do well.”

Schmidt said Coyle performed particularly well on her dives throughout the competition.

“Every dive Andrea did just stuck,” he said. “On every dive she had a beautiful takeoff. She did really well.”

Schmidt hopes more divers will take a dip in the pool throughout the summer months.

“During the school year the only time the pool was open for diving was on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 a.m.,” he said. “This summer the pool will be open to divers on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. I am hoping a lot of them come to the pool this summer.”

Later this summer, Schmidt hopes his team can make the trek to Anacortes or the short jaunt to Bainbridge for a similar kind of meet.

“It would be fun if we could up to Anacortes,” he said. “That would be something all of the divers would look forward to.”
