It would seem that the North Kitsap School District Board of Directors would prefer the old adage “Children should be seen and not heard” hold true as far as the new colors and mascot at the coming high school in Kingston are concerned.

The directors’ position — or opposition, as the case may be — was revealed this week as two mascots “The Buccaneers” and “The Patriots” were named as the top two choices of students who will attend the school. The proposed colors are, maroon, gold and white, and red, white and blue respectively. The NKSD board’s intended or unintended message about the student’s preliminary decision is this: thanks for the input but we don’t value your opinion. The school board’s reason to dislike the choices is pretty ridiculous, especially when one takes into consideration that colors really needn’t reflect the setting of the school. If that were the case, virtually every school in Seattle would don concrete gray and black. Maybe a hint of rainy sky blue?

Even so, with the board’s interests in mind, the North Kitsap Herald would like to announce our suggestions for the unofficial “school in the woods” mascot:

• (Riding on the blockbuster fame of “The Lord of the Rings”) The Kingston Ents

• The Non-Religiously Affiliated Druids

• The Environmentally Friendly, Biodegradable Kingston Free Range Chickens (OK, so it’s a bit of a stretch but the feathered football uniforms would make up for it)

• The Politically Correct Merry Men and Merry Women of Unincorporated Sherwood Forest

The school colors? Camouflage, of course. It would not only hide the school in the woods but also the student body.

In all seriousness, it sounds like this school is going to be a great place. Thanks to low bids, amenities that were once thought to be somewhat pie in the sky will be added. The yet-to-be-named high school in Kingston has the NKSD’s fingerprints all over it. It has the administration’s and the parents’ fingerprints all over it. We feel the students should be able to make their mark as well. They are, after all, the reason it’s being built in the first place.
