POULSBO — A report of a man with a rifle spurred Poulsbo police officers to go to the area around North Kitsap High and Poulsbo Middle schools May 13 at approximately 2:20 p.m.

Police received one call about a man in his early 20s, wearing dark clothes, carrying a rifle, according to Poulsbo Police Chief Al Townsend.

Several officers responded to the call and searched the area. Nobody was apprehended, according to Townsend.

It’s possible that whatever the caller saw in the person’s hands could have been something other than a gun, Townsend said. Someone with a gun near a school would typically generate more than one call, he said.

The call followed a power outage at the school, according to an email from district public relations director Jenn Markaryan.

“9-1-1 was called immediately and police responded within moments,” the email states. “Upon investigation, police stated the report was unsubstantiated and determined that the area was clear before the scheduled end of day for NKHS at 2:30 p.m.”
