Old Man Winter’s not going anywhere

Fear mongers who point to arguments like the theory of global warming as to why we all should recycle and drive hybrids haven’t been to North Kitsap recently. Winter is here and it’s here in a big way. As far as “global warming” goes, the North End seems to have joined much of the United States and been left out of the loop. Big snows, freezing temperatures and whatnot.

Sure the argument can be made that we’re polluting the planet and henceforth should cease and desist in the interest of future generations. It’s a good, solid argument, too. One that we should all take to heart.

But being pro-environment and anti-global warming are two different things entirely. Funny how the latter discussions pop up during the warmer months as opposed to say January. It all seems to make sense. Mankind is turning the earth into an oven, right? Yet local ski resorts are having their best seasons in years (Switzerland, not so much), and most motorists are barely getting from Point A to Point B without crashing into Point C.

It’s doubtful proponents of the theory of global warming give it much thought as they warm their cars up and scrape ice off their windshields. These same folks are the first to wave the ozone depletion flag in summer when temperatures soar.

Is the planet really getting hotter, or is it possible that the earth is going through another one of its cycles? It is a living, breathing thing after all. And an old one, too.

North America used to be covered in glaciers, while Antarctica was tropical. No doubt a few cavemen or the like pointed out that fire was to blame for the recession of the ice.

In short not much has changed, and we’re all a bunch of cavemen and cavewomen in the grand scheme of understanding the patterns of world we live in.

The inconsistencies of the weatherman is a good indication of this — outside of a week, he’s fairly clueless. Yet modern cavemen will argue that the world is getting hotter because its a requirement for everyone in California to drive Hummers. As if the past 100 years or so give an accurate depiction of something that is somewhere around 4.5 billion years old. That’s like reading a single word of “War and Peace” and doing a book report.

But we know best, yes? Scientific advances are on the upswing, and with them our understanding of everything. That which was once shrouded in darkness is now caught in the inescapable glow of our intelligence as we allegedly turn up the heat further.

If humans are so bright, why did we bring about all this “global warming” in the first place?

Just a little microwave food for thought.
