The Suquamish Community Advisory Committee met last week for the first time — at least in awhile — reviving hopes that an independent group of one form or another will take the steps necessary to ensure the town’s livability issues are adequately addressed. Improving everything from safety to roadways is a daunting task.

So daunting that various forms of community committees have had trouble staying on track for the past 14 years. The newest SCAC has surely considered this and we congratulate its members for forging ahead anyway. Suquamish needs people like you — actually we all do.

The mix of tribal and non-tribal residents makes the community fairly unique here in North Kitsap, but great strides have been made during the past several years to enhance relationships while promoting different heritages and walks of life. Sometimes groups get tripped up — that’s part of it — but those that get up, dust themselves off and keep walking tend to do for years and years.

It’s a discouraging process no doubt. Trying to implement change often is.

We like the group assembled as the SCAC and the fact that its members already have some big ideas for their small, but growing community. That’s a great place to start but some of its members know that in order to reach the first of many finish lines, staying on track, meeting regularly and working hard must occur. We’re sure it will and wish them nothing but success.
