He may be categorized as a Christian artist, but that hasn’t stopped John Reuben from thinking outside the box when it comes to spreading his message.

Reuben, once called Christian radio’s answer to Eminem, is out in support of his new release, “Word of Mouth,” and is making a stop at the Roxy Theatre, 270 4th St., in downtown Bremerton. Indie rockers Deas Vail from Russellville, Ark., and Lexington, Ohio’s Jonathan Hape, a singer/songwriter, open the show starting at 7 p.m. March 10. “Word of Mouth” came out in early February to highly favorable reviews, earning four (out of five) stars from Allmusic.com, JesusFreakHideout.com and ChristianityToday.com.

In his review on ChristianityToday.com, Russ Breimeier summed up the recording’s message as, “… about pursuits of dreams and success, which become misguided when our motivations and actions become altered after making God’s will secondary in our lives.” Allmusic.com’s Andy Whitman wrote, “This is a party for thinking men and women, but it’s still a party and the raucous funk appeals to both the brain and the booty. … You won’t find a truer, more honest, or more celebratory album this year.”

Reuben, who is clearly inspired by such acts as Beck and the Gorillaz in his experimentation, combines spoken word with pop sensibilities and eclectic instrumentation on his fifth effort. But it’s his lyrics which he leans heavily upon.

“Like most artists, I write from my own experiences with the understanding that my experiences can translate into other peoples lives,” Reuben said. “It all breaks down to hopes and dreams, human depravity and good times.”

Audiences can expect to also see the music as Reuben has made accompanying videos (ala the Gorillaz) which fit with Rueben’s gospel of enjoying the music any way one chooses.
