POULSBO — A Poulsbo couple was displaced Feb. 5 by a fire, but their 70-year-old log home was saved.

Crews from Poulsbo Fire, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue, Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, and Navy Region Northwest went to the scene of the fire just after 5 p.m. on Vetter Road, off Viking Way near the Kitsap Transit Station.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy black smoke billowing from the eaves and roof.

“This fire was particularly difficult to fight because there was a lot of smoke seeping through the second-story floor, hallway walls, and even exterior walls,” Poulsbo Fire Capt. John Warnke said in a report issued by the department.

“It appeared to have begun in a second-story closet wall, opposite the chimney. So we tore into that wall, only to find smoke coming from the floor joist and down the hall towards an exterior wall area.”

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is investigating the fire but the exact cause was unknown Feb. 6, Poulsbo Fire spokeswoman Jody Matson reported.

The 62-year-old male home owner and his 59-year-old partner were watching the Super Bowl in their nearby shop. The woman came down to the house to use the restroom when she noticed the smoke and called for help. The home owner said he bought the house from his father, who built the home in the early 1940s.

“My dad and uncle had a business building log homes in the area and this was the very first log home they built,” he told Matson.

The structure of the home still appears sound, but the home suffered significant smoke and electrical damage. The Red Cross was notified. The home owner was insured. There were no injuries.
