Law enforcement, cities honor Rep. Hansen
OLYMPIA — The Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs recently named Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island, one of their Legislators of the Year.
“It’s a huge honor to get an award from our state’s law enforcement officers … I’m grateful for their support,” Hansen said in an announcement of the award.
The council, also known by the abbreviation WACOPS, praised Hansen’s work on legislation relating to body cameras for law enforcement.
“Rep. Hansen recognized that the rush to implement body cam programs was a detriment to law enforcement officers and developed a task force within sideboards that were acceptable to WACOPS and provided us with two task force members,” the council stated in the award announcement.
Hansen is also the Association of Washington Cities’ latest City Champion Award recipient.
The AWC City Champion Awards acknowledges the “hard work of legislators who championed critical city priorities during the 2016 legislative session.”
“I’m grateful that the cities in Washington recognized my work with my Republican counterparts on protecting privacy,” Hansen said in an announcement of the award. “This shows that, in Washington state at least, we can still work together in a bipartisan, pragmatic way.”
Hansen was recognized specifically for his work dealing with law enforcement body cameras. Hansen has been working with community groups, law enforcement, the media, municipal governments and others to ensure that body cameras are used in a way that protects privacy.
Three residents named to Gonzaga president’s list
SPOKANE — Isabel Beaulieu of Kingston, and Shelbie Blevins of Poulsbo, and Kyle Van Wyck of Indianola earned placement on the Gonzaga University President’s List for fall semester 2016.
Students must earn a 3.85 to 4.0 grade-point average to be listed.
Gonzaga University is a private Catholic University providing a Jesuit education to more than 7,500 students. Gonzaga offers 75 fields of study, 25 master’s degrees, a doctorate in leadership studies, and a Juris Doctor degree through its School of Law.

Five residents earn degrees from WGU
SALT LAKE CITY — The following local residents have received their degree from Western Governors University. The university’s 32nd semi-annual commencement ceremony at took place on Feb. 11 at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Ashabi named to national scholars society
POULSBO — Anisa Ashabi, a senior at North Kitsap High School, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.
The society was founded by Claire Nobel of the Nobel Prize family.
Anisa’s academic performance placed her among a select group of individuals chosen for this honor.
Additionally, Anisa, who is a full-time Running Start student at Olympic College, has been honored with a place on the 2016 President’s List at Olympic for her 3.9 or higher GPA during spring and summer quarters.
Beckstrom named to dean’s list at College of Wooster
WOOSTER, Ohio — Sara Beckstrom, a graduate of Kingston High School, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at The College of Wooster. Beckstrom, a junior communication sciences and disorders major, achieved a grade point average of 3.65 or above.
The College of Wooster, founded in 1866, is a leading college for mentored undergraduate research.
Best, Ninemire on dean’s honors list at Montana State
BOZEMAN — Milton Best and Jamie Ninemire — both of Poulsbo — earned placement on the fall semester dean’s honor roll at Montana State University.
There are two MSU honor roll lists: the President’s and the Dean’s Honor Roll. Students must complete a minimum of 12 degree-eligible credit hours to be on either list.
Students with a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester were named to the President’s Honor Roll. The Dean’s Honor Roll includes students earning grade point averages of 3.5 or above for the semester.
Hunter named to honors list at Whitman College
WALLA WALLA – Hailey Hunter has achieved academic distinction for fall 2016 at Whitman College in Walla Walla.
Academic distinction is awarded after the completion of each semester. This recognition is given to all students who have completed a minimum of 12 credits, passed all credits attempted and have earned a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Hunter is a graduate of West Sound Academy.
Neer is touring wih Concordia College Choir
POULSBO – Emily Neer, a vocal performance major at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, is touring with The Concordia Choir on its annual national tour Feb. 25 to March 12.
Neer, a graduate of North Kitsap High School, is the daughter of Dale and Kathleen Neer of Poulsbo. She is a senior and is regularly listed on the dean’s list.
The choir’s 15-day 2017 national tour of the Southwestern United States includes performances in Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo.; Santa Fe and Las Cruces, N.M.; Tucson, Scottsdale and Sun City, Arizona; Rancho Santa Fe, Dana Point, Palm Desert, and Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Farmington and Moorhead, Minnesota.
The 72-voice a cappella choir is conducted by René Clausen, a world-renowned conductor and composer. He is also the artistic director of the Emmy® winning Concordia Christmas Concerts seen by audiences of 18,000 each year.
Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering more than 50 majors, including 15 honors majors and 12 pre-professional programs.
Sundquist named to dean’s list at Boston University
BOSTON, Massachusetts – Shelby W. Sundquist of Poulsbo earned placement on the dean’s list at Boston University for the fall semester.
Each school and college at Boston University has their own criterion for the dean’s list, but students generally must attain a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), or be in the top 30 percent of their class, as well as a full course load as a full-time student.
Founded in 1839, Boston University is the fourth-largest private university in the country and a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU), a nonprofit association of 62 of North America’s leading research-intensive institutions.
Zook named to dean’s list at Rochester
ROCHESTER, New York — Riley Zook, a 2016 Kingston High School graduate, earned placement on the fall dean’s list at Roch-ester Institute of Tech-nology.
Zook is a freshman working toward a bachelor of science in American Sign Language-English Interpretation, while studying at RIT’s National Tech\nical Institute of the Deaf. She is maintaining a 3.81 GPA.
In high school, Zook studied ASL for three years and as a senior did extended course work at Olympic College in Bremerton. Her appreciation of the language grew under the tutelage of Kingston High School teacher Rebecca Neeley and led her to the East Coast to pursue this field.
