BREMERTON — Embrace your chi as you work on your chill with Viva Flow Yoga’s “Brewga” event at 11:30 a.m. March 11 at Dog Days Brewing, 260 Fourth St., Bremerton.
This event combines the “chi” of yoga with the “chill” of beer for a combined session of both. Advance tickets are $25; tickets at the door are $30 (cash only). The event is, naturally, for people ages 21 and older.
“My main goal is to meet people where they’re at,” said Carla Jean Lundgren, owner of Viva Flow Yoga, “[to] go out into the community and offer yoga in a way that will translate to them.”
For years, Viva Flow Yoga has had combined yoga and wine tasting events called “Vino and Vinyasa.”
“I’ve had people say, ‘What about us who like beer?’ ” Lundgren said. “I decided to partner with (Dog Days Brewing, formerly Wobbly Hopps Brewery) to bring a yoga and beer event to the community for all the beer drinkers.”
Lundgren said this event is a great way to introduce more people to yoga.
“Yoga is so female dominated as far as students (in studio classes),” she said. “More men are getting involved … but doing yoga at a brewery is a great way to get more men involved, because most beer drinkers are men.”
She said people have told her that it was a great incentive to entice their boyfriends or husbands, or anyone else unfamiliar, to try yoga.
“I think it’s appealing because it’s fun,” Lundgren said.
“It sounds fun, it involves beer, it’s not intimidating because it’s not in the studio. It’s more of a lighthearted experience.”
This is the second time Viva Flow Yoga has had a “Brewga” event. The first one, held a few months ago, sold out in just a week, Lundgren said. Now, she said the event is circulating really well on Facebook, with people commenting, “it looks like fun,” “it’s something new,” etc.
“I think a lot of people are curious,” Lundgren said. “ ‘How do we pull this off? Are we drinking beer while we’re doing yoga?’ I tell them, ‘Just come and see, come check it out.’ ”
Actually, people receive their pint of beer — the cost of one is included in the event ticket — when they arrive; it’s up to them if they want to drink it before, during or after doing the yoga. Lundgren said she won’t be leading the group in anything that will make them throw up if they drink first.
“It’s just a fun, lighthearted event,” she said.
All skill levels are welcome to join in on the event, from very beginner to more advanced. Lundgren said she always teaches her classes to “the lowest level that walk in the room.” However, she also gives advanced modifications so everyone can “leave with whatever they were looking for” from the class.
“You’re not going to learn how to do a handstand in the middle of a brewery,” she said.
“You’re going to move, have fun, laugh and drink beer.”
