Prep sports: What’s going on, and what’s coming up after spring break

North Kitsap lacrosse hosts Peninsula on April 11

POULSBO — North Kitsap lacrosse will come out of spring break looking to take the league lead from Vashon — and is in a good position to do so.

North Kitsap (3-3-0, 3-4-0) tested itself more than Vashon (3-1-0, 3-1-0) by getting in three more games before spring break. North Kitsap is well represented on top 10 lists: Jordan Austin, 10th in goals; Riley Solis, ninth in assists; Daxton Solis second and Joel Ingram sixth in ground balls; goalie Ian Poffenroth, fourth in saves and 10th in save percentage. That’s of all players in the 81-team, five-division Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association.

And of North Kitsap’s losses, two have been by one or two goals. Three wins have been by one. That’s moxie.

3A powerhouse Peninsula (4-0-0, 4-2-0) will provide 2A Vashon and 2A North Kitsap with their first post-break tests. Vashon (3-1-0, 3-1-0) hosts Peninsula at 6:30 p.m. April 6; Peninsula defeated Vashon 11-5 on March 31. North Kitsap hosts Peninsula at 7:30 p.m. April 11; Peninsula defeated North 25-8 in the season opener.

Baseball | Kingston 7, Sequim 6 in 10 innings

SEQUIM — Kingston gave Sequim its fourth loss in as many games, but it didn’t come easily.

The 10th-inning defeat spoiled a great game at the plate and on the mound by the Wolves’ Justin Porter.

With Sequim trailing 5-0 after two innings, Porter relieved starter James Grubb, and went seven strong innings to keep the Wolves in the game. Porter allowed one run on five hits and three walks and struck out six.

He also went 4 for 5 at the plate with two runs.

Sequim tied the game with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but freshman pitcher Silas Thomas allowed a Kingston run on two walks and a base hit in the top of the 10th.

Kingston (2-1, 2-1) went into spring break in fifth place in the Olympic League 2A Division. The Bucs travel to North Mason (1-3, 1-5) on April 12, then host North Kitsap (2-1, 4-1) on April 14. Both games start at 4:15 p.m. — Peninsula Daily News

KINGSTON — Playing without their leading scorer Liam Harris, who is out with a thigh bruise, the Wolves gave second-place Kingston a hard time in the second half, but weren’t able to break through for a goal in a 3-0 loss.

“I think we played one of our most solid games all year. It seemed closer than 3-0,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

In addition to Harris, who was injured last week in a collision in a game versus Port Angeles, Sequim was missing defender Brandon Benson, who was out sick and injured keeper Navy Thomas-Brenske, who splits time with Nick Janikic.

The Wolves were outshot 9-1 in the first half as Kingston controlled the action and took a 2-0 lead into the break.

But Sequim responded in the second half, outshooting the Buccaneers 6-3 and getting a couple of good chances, one on a corner by Evan James. Kingston scored its third goal in the final minute of the game as the Wolves had everyone up in the offensive zone.

Kingston (4-1-0, 5-1-1) is tied for second in the 2A Olympic League, behind undefeated North Kitsap. Kingston hosts Cedarcrest at 1:45 p.m. April 8. — Peninsula Daily News
