PORT ORCHARD — While sponsors can’t promise that seagulls won’t be flying overhead, they can assure participants of plenty of fun and exercise Saturday, June 10 at the fourth annual Seagull Splat 5K Run.
The 5K race begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Comfort Inn on Bay Street in Port Orchard.
Event organizer Sharron King said the 5K event was moved from Memorial Day to June 10 in order to entice more runners to participate.
“Each year the run continues to grow,” King said. “It is a great fun run with waterfront scenery. Everyone always seems to be caught up in the moment of having a seagull splat on them!”
The overall male 5K winner last year was Doug Ortyn, who broke the record set in 2015 by Steve Vesbach with a time of 17:38. Vesbach’s record was 18:21. The overall female winner was Kristi Houk, who turned in a record time of 19:56, easily beating Katie Dolan’s 2015 record of 21:50.
This Fathoms O’ Fun-sponsored event will provide a portion of its proceeds to the Retsil Veterans Building 9 Transitional Housing program. Pre-registration fees are $30, which includes a t-shirt, or $25 without a t-shirt. Individuals who are running as part of a group of five or more can pre-register for $25, which includes a t-shirt, or $20 with no t-shirt. Teams must have a minimum of five participants.
Veterans and military personnel can pre-register for $20 (no t-shirt). Children ages 3-9 participating in the kid dashes can register for $5. Participants will receive a finisher’s toy.
Runners must have registered by June 1 to guarantee receiving a t-shirt. Registration on the day of the race is $30. A t-shirt is not included.
Kitsap Physical Therapy and Sports Clinic is the financial sponsor of the 5K event. King said the clinic also is supplying water bottles and is setting up a water station at Annapolis Dock.
