HANSVILLE — Dynamic couple Alix Kosin and Howie O’Brien sorted through 5,000 books donated this year for the upcoming spring book sale.

Were they overwhelmed?

“Not really,” O’Brien said. “We’ve been doing this fundraiser for four years now. We’re very organized.”

Most books came in the last two months. Kosin and O’Brien put them into categories and packed them into boxes. Soon, with the help of dedicated volunteers, they will unpack and place the books on 35 eight-foot tables, spine-side up.

The Greater Hansville Community Center Big Spring Book Sale is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. June 9; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 11 at 6778 Buck Lake Road, Hansville.

As always, there will be cookbooks, best-sellers and classic fiction, non-fiction, art, gardening, travel, vintage and religious books.

“The selection is a little different each time,” O’Brien said. “This spring, we have a lot of recent hardcover nonfiction, also a sizable collectibles section.”

Mysteries and children’s books abound — two particularly popular categories.

The books are a bargain: generally, paperbacks are 50 cents and hardcovers $1. There are also CDs for 50 cents and DVDs for $1.

For the first time, the use of electronic scanning devices will not be allowed; so many books were being scooped up by professional pickers.

So, now, folks have an equal chance to discover a real find — maybe even a national treasure.
