There’s a lot going on in June and some great things that we have accomplished in May.
Bike Rodeo: One of our members, Helen Hoover, an avid bicyclist for most of her life, headed up the Bike Rodeo and helped prepare close to 40 participants for safer fun on their bikes. She coordinated with the Girl Scouts, Kingston High School Key Club members, North Kitsap Fire &Rescue, and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department.
Many thanks to all the other folks that helped make this project such a success.
Grow good veggies: We also learned from Master Gardener Bob Samus what not to do in the Northwest when trying to grow tomatoes and other vegetables in our climate.
Samus has written articles for Sunset magazine and was the garden editor for the Los Angeles Times. Gather this great information for yourself by visiting bobsgardenpath.com.
Brew Fest: Our annual Brew Fest is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. June 24 at the tent pavilion at Mike Wallace Park. Great brews not to miss will include those of Downpour, Hood Canal, Valholl and Rainy Daze.
This annual event is lots of fun and you get to meet your neighbors, friends and folks from all over Washington. There will be live music in the park and things for kids to do and see. All profits support scholarships for deserving students in Kitsap County, and other projects supporting children in our community.
Berry sales: Our berry supplier retired this year and the weather has made it difficult to find another grower that hasn’t sold their product commercially, so we will focus on blueberries from Williams Berry Farm in Deming. Berries will be sold in five-pound containers at $4.50 per pound, which equals $22. Order forms are available on our website, www. greaterkingstonkiwanis.org. Delivery will be July 30, which is later than in prior years, because of the cooler start to summer. Contact Dave Muller at 360-642-4299 for more information.
Scholarships: We awarded four $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors this year: Nolan Platz, Victoria Sultan, Erin Talley and Wendy Yu. The awards were based on community service and academic performance. It’s always a great feeling to see such positive attitudes and exciting plans from our youth. I’ve served on several of these scholarship boards, and always wish we could grant all with scholarships to help them meet their goals. Good for them and good for our community.
