BREMERTON — The 41 year-old man who shot his common-law wife and then shot himself in the head on June 8 has died.

According to the King County Medical Examiner, he succumbed on June 10 at Harborview Medical Center.

The shooting incident took place about 10 a.m. June 8 at the Public Storage at 1950 NE Riddell Road, where the couple had arranged to meet to go through belongings, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The couple was separating after about 15 years as a couple, sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said. The woman, 40, was transported to Harrison Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, Wilson said. The woman’s stepfather, 52, was at the scene at the time of the shooting and was not injured.

The man and woman had two children. They were not at the scene, Wilson said.

The man, woman and stepfather had met in the parking lot of a nearby mall that morning, then drove in separate vehicles to the storage unit, Wilson said. The wife and stepfather arrived first in a Mitsubishi SUV; the husband pulled in behind them in a U-Haul truck.

As the woman was getting out of her vehicle, her husband shot at her multiple times from behind the SUV, Wilson said. He then shot himself in the head.

The weapon was a 9mm semiautomatic handgun.

The man had been named in several police reports in the past, both as an alleged victim and as an alleged assailant, but they were not major incidents, Wilson said.
