Presentation on Silverdale incorporation for business owners

Citizens United for Incorporation, the committee pushing for Silverdale cityhood, will host a small group presentation for local business owners beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 31 in Silverdale. The meeting is for local business owners to learn about the incorporation process and how it may affect them. There will also be an opportunity for business owners to ask questions they may have.

Food Co-op announces East Bremerton location

Kitsap Community Food Co-op’s Board of Directors has signed a letter of intent to build a community-owned grocery store at the new Youth Wellness Center Campus in East Bremerton.

Prerequisite to construction, the board said in a statement, is meeting a goal of 500 new member-owners for the new store. The board said they are nearly half-way to meeting that goal.

The site is the former Bremerton Junior High Campus and is currently the home of the central kitchen for the Bremerton School district. The board listed as partners the City of Bremerton, Bremerton School District and the Bremerton Boys & Girls Club. Together with those groups, the board said the new center is “Poised to unite the community around health and wellness, especially as it relates to childhood obesity, by offering the county access to local produce and products in an accessible location.”

Consultants from other organizations, including food co-op advocacy groups and food co-ops from around the state and nation. Involved as consultants were Hambleton Resources, Inc.; The Northwest Cooperative Development Center; The friendly City Food Co-op in Harrisonburg, Virginia; Stephen Tan, a member of the Board of Trustees for PCC in Seattle; The Food Co-op in Port Townsend; and members of the boards of the Skagit Valley and Community Food Co-ops of Mount Vernon and Bellingham.

Bremerton daughter graduates Navy basic

Navy Seaman Kristy L. Munyan, daughter of Korri R. Ostheller-Munyan of Bremerton, Wash. and John L. Munyan, Sr of Bremerton, Wash., recently graduated U.S. Navy basic training at the Navy’s Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the program, which lasted eight weeks, Munyan completed training that included classroom and hands-on instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, shipboard safety, and aircraft safety. Physical fitness was also emphasized during the training.

Munyan is a 2009 graduate of Bremerton High School.
