PORT ORCHARD — Halloween will be celebrated in scary fashion Saturday, Oct. 28 when the Port Orchard Bay Street Association hosts the Port Orchard SpookFest Trick or Treat event downtown.

The event will run from 2-6 p.m. along Bay Street.

“We planned trick or treat on Saturday rather than Halloween, not only for the safety of the children but also to provide a day of fun events for kids of all ages,” said Kathleen Wilson, POBSA president.

Port Orchard SpookFest includes a scarecrow display and contest at the Port Orchard Public Market through Oct. 28.

“This is the first of what we hope will be an annual Scarecrow Contest, said Scott Kirvan of Slaughter County Brewing Company and a member of the POBSA event committee. “We encourage scarecrow artists of all ages, including individuals, businesses, schools, students and civic groups, to use their decorating skills to build unique and creative scarecrows in four categories — traditional, open, youth (under 14) and business/non-profit.”

Scarecrow strollers are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture their favorite scarecrows and post on Instagram under #POScarecrow. Prizes will be awarded at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Port Orchard Public Market. A committee of judges will be appointed and a People’s Choice Award will be chosen.

Registration for the Scarecrow contest is $5 for individuals and teams, and $10 for businesses/non-profits. Applications are online at www.pobsa.com or on the organization’s Facebook page. They also can be picked up at Sue’s Juice Bar and Sandwich Shop in the public market.
