13th annual Kitsap Cup will take place on Jan. 1 in Bremerton
Teams from as far away as Port Angeles will descend upon Kitsap County on New Year’s Day to take part in the Kitsap Cup at Olympic Sports Center in Bremerton.
The tournament is held through Futbol for Life, a program that was created 15 years ago by Lou Bond and JT Knowlton to help care for children in Sierra Leone. All proceeds are given to Silverdale-based nonprofit Children of the Nations, which sponsors children and helps provide them with food, water, education, healthcare and counseling. Get ready for a great day on the pitch.
North Kitsap has the basketball teams to beat
Both the boys and girls currently sit atop the 2A Olympic League with identical records — 4-0 in league play, 7-1 overall.
In a 55-42 win over Olympic on Dec. 12, junior Raelee Moore scored 20 for North Kitsap while Grace Johnson added 11 and Noelani Barreith chipped in ten. Barreith led the team with 15 in a 70-50 victory over North Mason on Dec. 15 with Pearson (14) Moore (12) and Olivia Selembo (10) close behind. Barreith then scored 19 to lead the way in the 46-37 win over South Kitsap on Dec. 16. North Kitsap squares off against Bainbridge on Dec. 19 and then will participate in the Anacortes Tournament on Dec. 28-29.
After a 20-point victory over second place Olympic, the boys rolled past Waverley from Australia and North Mason last week and do not have another game until the University of Victoria Vikes Tournament in Canada from Dec. 28-30. The Vikings will head right back into their league schedule with Sequim and Kingston coming up after the new year, followed by a rematch with second place Olympic on Jan. 12.
North Mason hosts tournaments Dec. 22-23
North Mason High School in Belfair will be the center of attention next weekend as it plays host to the Hawkins Memorial Junior Varsity and Girls Tournament and the North Mason Classic. South Kitsap, Klahowya, Olympic, North Kitsap and Bremerton will all send wrestlers to the Hawkins Tournament while North Kitsap, Klahowya, Kingston, Bremerton and Central Kitsap will participate in the boys tournament.
Competitive swim meets resume in early January
It’s just practice at the pool until 2018, but the second half of the swim season promises to be an entertaining one. Circled o most calendars should be a dual meet between Kingston and Olympic on Jan. 11. The Buccaneers are the defending 2A champions and lost its first meet of the season against 3A champs Bainbridge on Dec. 14, but has been slicing and dicing its way through Olympic League competition and has already qualified several swimmers for the state meet. But the Trojans are swimming well, led by junior Ross Burchell, one of their returnees from the state meet last season.
