BELLEVUE — South Kitsap’s boys basketball program has not left the Puget Sound region for a tournament during the holidays since 2005.

That might change next season.

Wolves coach John Callaghan said he is in contact with former assistant Justin Anderson, who’s now stationed in Hawaii with the Coast Guard, about setting up some games there in December.

“We’ll have to fundraise big-time,” said Callaghan, adding that Anderson might be able to line up Department of Defense housing for players and coaches.

South has competed in holiday tournaments in Bellevue and Bothell since 2006. Its last out-of-state tournament came the previous year at the Victoria Prep Invitational in British Columbia. The Wolves also have traveled to Alaska, California, Oregon and Utah for tournaments under Callaghan.

“We had an opportunity to go up (to Alaska) two years ago, but that’s when the economy went crazy,” Callaghan said. “We just couldn’t afford it.”

Callaghan also did not discount the possibility of returning to Bellevue.

“I’ve always enjoyed coming here,” he said. “Coming off this tournament, we’ve always kind of played our best basketball.”

But he added that he liked the “bonding” process that occurs when his teams fly and stay somewhere. South did not stay overnight during its three-game tournament in Bellevue.

• The Wolves won four of their last five games before New Year’s Day, but all came against teams with losing records. Their only game against a team with a winning record was the Bellevue tournament opener. The Bear Creek School, which competes in the Class 2B Sea-Tac League, improved to 8-0 by beating South Kitsap 75-60 on Dec. 28.

“I would like to play that one again,” Callaghan said.

The Wolves defeated Juanita and Renton, but those teams left Bellevue with a combined 7-13 record.

Before playing on the eastside, South also defeated Shelton (3-6) and Stadium (0-9).

But Callaghan said the Wolves can compete against quality competition. South lost 78-71 to Lincoln on Dec. 7. The Abes have a 9-1 record.

“Lincoln and Olympia are really good teams and we had our opportunities,” he said.

• Turnovers were a significant problem for the Wolves in Bellevue. After committing just 11 turnovers against Bear Creek, South had 43 combined against Renton and Juanita.

“I think eight of them were traveling,” said Callaghan, referring to the Juanita game. “Pivoting is one of the most fundamental things. We have some things to clean up.”
