POULSBO — Looking to stay alive in the postseason, the North Kitsap girls basketball team took care of a 67-42 win over Sequim on Feb. 1.
Head coach Penny Gienger said her team played well and forced enough turnovers to earn the victory. “Everybody got to play,” she said. “We made sure everyone had a chance to score.”
Although the margin was 25 points, Gienger was quick to credit Sequim’s offensive output. One Sequim athlete hit a triple between half court and the 3-point line, catching Gienger’s attention.
But the Vikings’ offense got the best of Sequim, and now North Kitsap focuses its attention on Port Angeles. Both teams are scheduled to tipoff at 3 p.m. Feb. 3 at Kingston High School. On the line: The league championship.
The two teams met for a Jan. 30 game in which the Vikings led for three-and-a-half quarters but ultimately surrendered to the Roughriders.
“We felt like we gave the game away on Tuesday,” Gienger said. “We have a lot of respect for Port Angeles, but we felt we should have won.”
In anticipation of the league crowning, she said her players must do a better job to “take care of the ball” if they want to win.
“We kind of got frazzled by [the Roughriders’] defense and made some really bad decisions,” Gienger said. “But, I think my kids are ready to get into the playoffs.”
