Olympic bowlers finish third at state tournament

Bremerton’s Sutton, Central Kitsap’s Clewis among top finishers

UNIVERSITY PLACE — After taking second place in the league and district tournaments, Olympic finally leapfrogged Klahowya to finish third at the 1A/2A state tournament that took place Feb. 1-3 at Narrows Plaza Bowl.

High games for the Trojans included a 950 in game six and a 199 in the eighth Baker game. Marissa Nemeth and Samantha Stump both took home top-15 finishes as Olympic racked up a total of 6,750 pins.

The Eagles finished fifth and steadily picked up pins throughout the tournament, but never had the big game to overtake Olympic or fourth-place Franklin Pierce, save for a 197 in their seventh Baker.

Bremerton’s Hannah Sutton had been a contender for a state championship all season long and ended up finishing third with 1,135 pins to Brooklyn Boudreau of Mark Morris and Grace Gibbs of Black Hills. Sutton was excellent with two 200 games and only one below 181, but she was unable to overcome a 256 in the sixth and final game by Gibbs, which put her one pin ahead of Sutton for second place.

In the 3A tournament, Central Kitsap’s Jazmine Clewis started hot with a 228 out of the gates, which helped her to a third-place finish with 1,141 pins. Fellow Cougar Rebecca Sharp racked up 925 pins for 30th place.

South Kitsap’s Abigal Kay and Ginger Cermak both placed in the top 30 in the 4A tournament. Kay finished 23rd with 970 pins and Cermak finished in 27th with 948.
