PUYALLUP — It was a historic night at Heritage Park for South Kitsap’s baseball team April 19 as a walk-off hit put an end to powerhouse Puyallup’s 41-game winning streak.

Drew Worden ripped a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Wolves a 3-2 victory, snapping the Vikings’ winning streak, which dated back to March of last season.

“We were confident. We know we are a good team,” head coach Marcus Logue said.

“We were ready to take on a really good Puyallup team and the players showed up. They battled every inning and finished well.”

Worden’s hit will make the headlines, but senior Jason Sauer’s outstanding performance on the mound helped South Kitsap stay in the game after Puyallup took an early lead. Sauer threw 81 pitches in seven innings, striking out nine.

The Vikings scored one run in each of the first two innings on RBI singles by Brady Hinkle and Evan Scavotto, but Sauer kept their bats quiet the rest of the way.

P.J. Mortiz stepped to the plate in the fourth with Torre DiGiovanni and Jacob Duarte on base and blasted a ball into the outfield for a double, scoring both of his teammates to tie the game.

USA Today had ranked Puyallup No. 22 in the country.

“It was a good win tonight — a good team effort,” Logue said.

South Kitsap has rebounded well from a painful 6-2 loss to Graham-Kapowsin on April 9. The Wolves went down to Olympia April 18 and pounded out 17 hits against the Bears in an 11-1 victory, toppling the reigning 4A state champions.
