BLYN — Two passengers were released from Olympic Medical Center on Sunday after a Blyn-area vehicle wreck Saturday night that killed the driver, a 21-year-old Silverdale man, authorities said.
Jonathan Olsen-Devenney was one of three Western Washington University extension students in the vehicle, Clallam County Sheriff’s Detective Josh Ley said Monday.
Olsen-Devenney was ejected from the 1995 Geo Metro 4-door sedan he was driving at about 9 p.m. Saturday about 3.5 miles south of the U.S. Highway 101-Woods Road intersection south of the Longhouse Market & Deli on Highway 101.
Excessive speeds, coupled with alcohol and marijuana use, are believed to be contributing factors to the cause of the crash, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release issued Monday.
Olsen-Devenney, who was not wearing a seat belt, lost control of the car as it was traveling northbound before it slid off the road and rolled over 1½ times, Ley said.
Passengers Breann Sandoval of Silverdale and Kessa Ogle of Poulsbo, both 23, were transported to Olympic Medical Center.
Ogle, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the back seat and broke four ribs, Ley said.
Sandoval, who was wearing a seat belt and was in the front seat, was treated for minor injuries, Ley said.
OMC discharged Ogle and Sandoval on Sunday, he said.
An open whiskey bottle was found at the site, Ley said.
Ley said there also was marijuana and the odor of alcohol in the vehicle, saying that all three people had been drinking.
The fatality remains under investigation pending an autopsy on Olsen-Devenney.
Olsen-Devenney, Sandoval and Ogle were in the Sequim area for a WWU field-lab day before going to a bar in Sequim and driving up Woods Road, which connects to an unimproved state Department of Natural Resources road, where Ogle did some recreational shooting, Ley said.
“It’s common for shooting and camping,” Ley said of the area.
“It is round-the-clock traffic.”
After the crash, Sandoval looked for help and could not get cellphone reception, Ley said.
A camper found Sandoval wandering down the road, and they were able to call 9-1-1.
