April 27
8 a.m.

• Pilfered safe leads to a schoolyard brawl. South Kitsap High School staff advised CenCom of a fight in the south parking lot. On arrival, officers met with a young male who had two black eyes. He said he had been attacked by a fellow student who believed he had stolen property from a mutual friend. The friend told officers the beating victim had spent the previous Saturday night at his house and, at some point during the night, he became aware that someone in the room was trying to move a heavy object. In the morning, he noticed his safe was gone, but when he confronted his guest, he denied stealing the safe and stood behind a fourth boy, who none of those present would challenge. At the bus stop, however, the alleged thief was confronted by a friend of the safe’s owner, and a brawl ensued. The boy who did the beating was charged with fourth-degree assault and given a court date.

April 28
1:09 a.m.

• Loyalty to a friend could result in obstruction charge. An officer responding to a report of a silent alarm at a Bay Street business determined the building was secure and went back to his patrol car to fill out the false report paperwork. As he was doing so, a truck pulled up behind him and the driver walked across Bay Street without using the crosswalk. When the officer called out to the man to warn him about jaywalking, he suddenly began to run and turned in to the Moondogs Too bar. The pursuing officer entered the establishment but did not see the fleeing suspect inside. Returning to the truck, he ran a search on the vehicle’s plates and determined the name of its registered owner. Returning to the bar, the officer asked the bartender if he knew the truck’s owner and he said, yes, he was sitting nearby having a beer. When the officer confronted him, though, he realized this wasn’t the same man he had pursued. He asked the man whether he had loaned his truck that night, and he said he had, but he refused to say who the borrower was. The officer told him he could be cited for obstructing an officer, and he said he understood but still refused to cooperate. The man was not arrested, but his name was forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office with a recommendation he be cited.

April 29
4:21 p.m.

• Intoxicated patron battles police at KFC. Cencom advised Port Orchard units a male suspect in the KFC restaurant on Bethel Road was drinking from a bottle of beer and had struck a restaurant employee with the bottle when he tried to remove the man from the restaurant. On arrival, the officers recognized the subject as someone they had previously arrested numerous times. He was observed to have a bottle of beer in one had and a Mikes Hard Lemonade in the other, and when he saw the officers coming, he tried to finish both quickly. When the confronted the suspect, the officers attempted to handcuff him but he resisted. First they forced the suspect onto his knees, then flat on his stomach but he continued to resist. Twice the arresting officers threatened to Taze the struggling suspect, and once even touched the device to his leg without pulling the trigger, but he still kept struggling — eventually kicking one officer in the chest and causing him to fall over backwards into a food rack. By that time Kitsap County deputies had arrived and helped subdue the suspect. He was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, assaulting the store employee and theft of the beer from the Safeway store up the street.

6:54 p.m.

• Sucker punch doesn’t result in arrest, but outstanding warrant does. Officers were advised of a domestic violence assault on West Avenue, but the male victim said he had a ferry to catch and didn’t want to press charges. After being informed that a report would need to be filed anyway, the 26-year-old man told the officer he was visiting his girlfriend when he heard her call out from inside the house. When he reached the door, the boyfriend of his girlfriend’s sister punched him in the face and told him to get out of the way. He then pushed the victim off the porch and left the scene. No one offered to provide personal information about the assailant, but while officers were still there, a family member showed up and asked why he was walking alone down Tremont Street. The officer drove to the location and located him near the Port Orchard Boulevard intersection. Once they identified the intoxicated suspect, they discovered he also had an outstanding warrant for third-degree driving with a suspended license. He was transported to Kitsap County Jail and booked.

April 30
2:10 a.m.

• Who says pot makes you mellow? An officer patrolling near the China Sun Buffet on Bethel Road observed a vehicle exceeding the speed limit in rainy conditions and a check of his radar unit confirmed it was going 46 in a 35 mph zone. He also observed the vehicle weaving into the oncoming lane. Calling ahead to an officer already positioned near the Bethel Roundabout, they were able to pull the suspect vehicle to the curb. The driver of the vehicle was uncooperative with one officer, while the car’s passenger refused to open the door for the other. Both officers smelled marijuana from the vehicle and believed the occupants were impaired. One of the officers attempted to open the car door through the passenger window, which was opened a crack, but when he did the passenger pinned his arm to the door and said, “I hope that hurt.” Eventually both suspects were removed from the vehicle and two baggies of marijuana were found inside. They were booked for possession and obstructing a law enforcement officer. Two dogs in the car were taken into custody, as well.

7 :55 p.m.

• Dementia sufferer, pit bull wander off. A Port Orchard officer was advised of a missing person from a Sidney Avenue apartment. On arrival, he met with a 50-year-old female resident, who said her 70-year-old roommate, who suffers from dementia, had wandered off. She said the missing woman, to whom she is not related, was at home when she and a third roommate left around 1 p.m. to run errands. She said they told the missing woman to stay at home, but she wasn’t there when they returned around 6 p.m. She was described as wearing a purple-and-pink coat and a pink hat. She was also said to be accompanied by her dog, a black-and-white pit bull. After several hours of searching in vain, the woman was reported found at the Bethel Road RiteAid pharmacy. The investigating officer noted in his report that the missing woman’s two roommates seemed incapable of giving her the level of care she requires and recommended the case be referred to Adult Protective Services and Kitsap Mental Health.
