BREMERTON — A fire that broke out yesterday in Gorst in the Bremerton watershed is “just about contained,” according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Crews have been working since the fire call first came in at about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday. The blaze, known as the Werner Fire, eventually grew to 4.3 acres. By Wednesday evening, crews had a dozer line around the fire.

“It’s just about contained,” said Janet Pearce, a DNR spokesperson. “They will have a couple firefighters watching it overnight tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll have a couple of engines to make sure those hot spots are out.”

The fire did not get close enough to the water supply to affect the nearby reservoir, which provides drinking water for parts of Kitsap County, though Bremerton Fire Chief David Schmitt said DNR firefighters determined the fire was heading in that direction.

”That was our big concern, it getting into the watershed, obviously,” Schmitt said.

Fire units from Bremerton, Central Kitsap and South Kitsap all responded to the initial call. Firefighters had a difficult time reaching the fire to pinpoint its location, Schmitt said. One of the crews even had to hike through the heavily wooded area.

“It was very heavy cover, a heavily timbered area,” Schmitt said. “It was difficult to pinpoint what street their access would be, but they finally found a point of ingress.”

Pearce said Thursday afternoon the fire would likely be out by the end of the day Friday.
