PORT ORCHARD — A sewage spill originating from the Naval Base Kitsap prompted the Kitsap Public Health District to issue a no-contact advisory Aug. 14 for Sinclair Inlet and the head of Port Washington up to Lions Park.

In its advisory, the county agency said the public should avoid contact with the water in the affected area, including swimming, wading and taking part in water recreation where water could be swallowed or get in the mouth, nose or eyes.

John Kiess of the public health district said 80,000 gallons of sewage was spilled over a two-week period into Sinclair Inlet waters from July 30 to Aug. 14.

“People should also avoid direct skin contact if possible, and immediately wash with soap and water if they have exposure to the water,” Kiess said.

Signs have been posted at locations around Sinclair Inlet and the head of Port Washington Narrows, up to Lions Park.

The area is already permanently closed to shellfish harvesting due to pollution, he said.

The no-contact advisory is in effect through Aug. 21.

Note: An earlier report indicated the spill originated from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The Kitsap Public Health District revised its initial release to now report the spill came from Naval Base Kitsap.
