EAST BREMERTON — It wasn’t a close game for very long, but the Trojans savored their first victory of the season long after things got out of hand on the scoreboard.
Zeke Gillick threw four touchdown passes in the first quarter as his team jumped out to a 35-0 within the first 12 minutes of the game. The onslaught continued and Olympic cruised to a 56-12 win over Kingston.
After the game, the team’s celebration was more spirited than usual, exorcising the demons from last week’s loss to North Mason, in which they gave up 30 points in the fourth quarter.
“They were itching for their first win,” Olympic head coach Sal Quitevis said. “We could have taken last week’s game and had a dud, but these guys came back and worked hard this week knowing they had to get their first ‘W’ under their belts.”
The Trojans scored touchdowns on their first six drives of the game, starting with Malcolm Dewalt’s 20-yard run to open the scoring. Gillick then connected twice with Darelle White and once each with Dewalt and Adam Johnson for scores. Dewalt then capped the streak with a 67-yard run.
Gillick threw for 152 yards and four scores in all. Dewalt rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries and added a 41-yard touchdown reception. Adam Johnson hauled in two passes for 68 yards and and a touchdown, and Darelle White’s two receptions both went for scores and a total of 43 yards.
“It was great to get the momentum in the beginning and keep things rolling,” Gillick said.
Kingston got on the board in the second quarter when Max Moran finished off a 13-play, 61-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown. Tyler Marquez broke free for a 56-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but it was far little, too late.
The Trojans find themselves in the funny position of having an ugly overall record (1-3), thanks to non-league losses to Central Kitsap and Bainbridge, but remaining very much in the hunt for a league title. Olympic matches up well with every opponent remaining on its schedule if its top players can stay healthy all season.
“We played three quality teams [in our losses],” Quitevis said. “We knew North Mason would be one of top two or three in the league. They hung tough. We talked all week about staying focused, executing and not having mental breakdowns. I think they stayed the course and did a good job of getting the win tonight.”
