Couple recognized for Audubon volunteer work

Sandy and Gene Bullock received the Helen Engle Volunteer of the Year Award during the 2018 Audubon Conference of Washington on Oct. 13.

The Bullocks have served in leadership roles within the Kitsap Audubon Society for 15 years, with Sandy serving as President for five years and eight years as treasurer. Sandy Bullock also founded and chairs the Kitsap Audubon Scholarship Committee, responsible for awarding $45,000 in funds to students pursuing degrees related to protecting birds and wildlife habitat.

Gene Bullock has served as president, conservation chair and education chair for Kitsap Audubon. Additionally, Gene Bullock has organized annual Christmas bird counts for 15 years. Gene is the recipient of previous volunteer of the year awards from Washington Conservation Voters in 2006 and Washington State Audubon in 2008.

The National Audubuon Society is a nonprofit environmental conservation group founded in 1905. “The National Audubon Society protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow, throughout the Americas using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation,” the group’s website reads.
