FEDERAL WAY — Olympic’s Chloe Partsch became a state champion on Saturday at the 2A state swimming meet, but not in the event she imagined.
Partsch captured the first state title in program history with a 2:11.39 mark in the 200-yard individual medley at King County Aquatics Center. She was hoping to walk away with a championship in her favorite event, the 100-yard butterfly, but despite posting a lifetime best 57.28, she finished second by .15 to Annika Eisele of Aberdeen.
“It was a little twist-up, but I’m still happy with it,” Partsch said.
Olympic finished seventh overall at the state meet. The 200-yard medley relay team of Hannah Zimmer, Arly Lagat, Partsch and Danielle Snyder took fourth, and the same foursome took third in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Snyder also finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Kingston’s Claudia Velie was the swimmer that Partsch managed to edge out in the 200-yard individual medley. Velie, who also finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke, finished her career Saturday holding nearly every Kingston girls swimming record.
“It’s pretty emotional, but I’m so happy with how I swam this year,” Velie said.
At the 3A state meet, Central Kitsap took ninth place with freshman Amanda Ashmore reaching the podium twice — she finished sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.84 and seventh in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.62.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Taylor Sims, Chelsea Miller, Ashmore and Haley Morkert finished eighth with their mark of 3:40.08. Sims took eighth in the 200-yard freestyle and Morkert finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle.
At the 4A state meet, South Kitsap’s Arianna Ongaro finished 14th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.28
