PORT ORCHARD — Kitsap County work crews have closed Harris Road Southeast between Southeast Lund Avenue and Southeast Salmonberry Road due to Tuesday’s damaging tornado.
Also closed to traffic is Bethel Burley Road between Southeast Lund and Southeast Salmonberry Road. Southeast Tiburon Court continues to be closed to vehicular traffic, as well.
The county reported that Salmonberry, between Branson Drive Southeast and Harris, is restricted to through traffic.
Heavy damage was sustained to homes and commercial businesses in the area impacted by the tornado, which dropped from the sky just after 2 p.m., crossing Bethel Avenue and passing over the Walmart Superstore. It then generated damage to a residential neighborhood behind the department store, downing tree limbs, electrical and cable wires, and taking off roofs on some homes.
At the peak of the electrical outage, Puget Sound Energy reported Tuesday afternoon that 1,500 customers were without power in the area of the tornado.
Those affected by the twister and are without shelter can visit St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Ave. SE, for emergency shelter and supplies, according to the Red Cross.
